The 7th Meeting of the BRICS Trade Ministers was held in Shanghai from August 1 to 2. Chaired by Chinese Minister of Commerce Mr. Zhong Shan, the meeting was attended by the BRICS trade ministers and principal chiefs of some major international organizations. As an important preparatory event in the trade area for the BRICS Summit to be held in Xiamen this September, it was also the first meeting of the BRICS trade ministers, as the BRICS cooperation ushered in its second “golden decade”.

Capt. Xu Lirong attended the meeting in Shanghai in his capacity as the chairperson of BRICS Business Council.

On August 1, Capt. Xu Lirong participated in the ministerial meeting and delivered the opening remarks. He said that some issues of common concern among the BRICS business communities, such as trade facilitation, investment facilitation and e-commerce, had all been included in the agenda of the trade ministers’ meeting. The BRICS Business Council is confident that the outcomes of the meeting will bring tangible benefits to and create better developmental opportunities for the business community. He also expressed that the BRICS Business Council will continue to serve as a bridge between the government and businesses, to vigorously implement the initiatives and outcomes generated by the government cooperation mechanism, and to continue collecting the appeals made by the business community and propose advice to the governments. The Council will also enhance cooperation in an array of fields, including trade and investment facilitation, infrastructure development, harmonization of technical standards, and partnership with the New Development Bank. Meanwhile, it would actively explore cooperation opportunities in such new areas as blue economy, digital economy and green economy, among others.
